"What you are is a complicated girl with simple needs. You need your books and time to read, and you need a few friends and you need someone-not to take care of you, but to care for you. If you have all those things, you’ll always be alright."

Someone asked the Dalai Lama what surprises him most. This was his response:

stephbird:

“Man, because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; He lives as if he’s never going to die, and then he dies having never really lived.”

Well, that was…accurate. Huh.

quote television Lena Dunham
"I want you to know, the first time I fuck you, I might scare you a little, because I’m a man. And I know how to do things."

The latest in lines from Girls, episode “All Adventurous Women Do”.

I love this shit, and I can not feel more terrible about that. But. Whatever. I know writer/creator/hilarity-on-a-stick Lena Dunham has defended some of the especially absurd moments (such as eating a cupcake in the shower? with Allison Williams?), but she has also admitted that (shockingly) some of the moments are just moments:

This character of Hannah, who is her own specific, isolated, entitled weirdo, thinking that she can somehow speak for everybody was so funny to me, so the idea that anybody’s taking that idea seriously is also funny.

Woody Allen: The Fresh Air Interview: “In the problems of movie making, if you don’t solve your problem, all that happens to you is that your movie bombs. So the movie is terrible. So people don’t come to see it … This is hardly a terrible punishment compared to what you’re given out in the real world of human existence.”

"Remember that there are only three kinds of things anyone need ever do. (1) Things we ought to do (2) Things we’ve got to do (3) Things we like doing. I say this because some people seem to spend so much of their time doing things for none of the three reasons, things like reading books they don’t like because other people read them. Things you ought to do are things like doing one’s school work or being nice to people. Things one has to do are things like dressing and undressing, or household shopping. Things one likes doing — but of course I don’t know what you like. Perhaps you’ll write and tell me one day."

quote internet technology design
"If you wanted to encounter a set of ideas that were radically different than your own – say those of a confrontational homeless guy who sleeps in a tub – your best bet in an era before telecommunications was to move to a city. Cities are technologies for trade, for learning, for worship, but they’re also a powerful communication technologies. Cities enables realtime communication between different individuals and groups and the rapid diffusion of new ideas and practices to multiple communities. Even in an age of instantaneous digital communications, cities retain their function as a communications technology that enables constant contact with the unfamiliar, strange and different."

Says to himself
The boy is no good. The boy is just no good.
but he takes you in his arms and pushes your flesh around
to see if you could ever be ugly to him.
You, the now familiar whipping boy, but you’re beautiful,
he can feel the dogs licking his heart.
Who gets the whip and who gets the hoops of flame?
He hits you and he hits you and he hits you.
Desire driving his hands right into your body.
Hush, my sweet. These tornados are for you.

You wanted to think of yourself as someone who did these kinds of things.
You wanted to be in love
and he happened to get in the way.

November 5th 2011 design quote
"It’s easy to not release an app because you haven’t finished “major” basic features like password reset, but how many times is a user really going to need to reset their password? How likely is it to cause them to abandon your product? Stop building the illusion of “core functionality” that will rarely/never be used and optimize your product for the thing it does. Ensure you’re making something people want (and I doubt it’s a really nice password reset form)."
